THE MOST HE CAN DO  c Louisa Wise

The most he can do is hold you
The most he can do is sit with you
All the rest now, Sary
The rest is up to you
Can he love you, Sary
It's up to you.

I know how slow the pace in this place
That makes him bigger than life
Let go of your sorrow
Let go of all that strife
Let go of your sorrow
And lead your life.

The most he can do is love you
The most he can do is live with you
He's no savior, Sary
But he's saving his love for you
Can you love him, Sary
It's up to you.

SWEET BIRDS c Louisa Wise

Here I'm alone, with my memory wangling
Here I'm alone, walking years ago now
But I will come back to my own bed and body
I will come back with the dawning
And the music of birds
Sweet birds.

Here I'm alone with my fearsome darksome thinking
Here I'm alone with my anxious wayward mind
But I will come back to my own place of shelter
I will come back with the dawning
And the music of birds
Sweet birds.

I'm learning this road in the darkening wandering
Learning to feel my own way along home
And I will come back to my own bed and body
I will come back with the dawning
And the music of birds
Sweet birds, sweet birds.

SCUDRUNNER c Louisa Wise

Tiny little plane that’s a work of art
White with orange on the tail oh
Gotta step outside to change your mind
Gotta take off your shoes to get inside
Flying up the coast in patchy rain
Over beautiful ocean and land oh
Forty-four minutes to the city of Perth
‘Stead of 3 long hours by the road oh

Over Leschenault lakes full of thrombolites
Over John Boyle O’Reilly’s escape oh
Over fish and foxes, snakes and roos
Trees and rivers and dams oh
Scudrunner’s beautiful hands on the levers and wheel oh, Micko
Flying me north to some people and friends
To the music, to the music in Freo.

Tiny plane in the air over birds of the air
Windblown window in the rain oh
Banking in a circle in the shafts of light
Shafts of light on the waves oh
Scudrunner’s beautiful hands on the levers and wheel oh, Micko
Flying me north to some people and friends
To the music, to the music in Freo.

The Darling in the offing and the tuart trees
Truck farms, flower farms, trains oh
Bushtracks, sandtracks, houses and cars
Shafts of light in the rain oh
Scudrunner’s beautiful hands on the levers and wheel oh, Micko
Flying me north to some people and friends
To the music, to the music in Freo
Scudrunner’s beautiful hands on the levers and wheel oh, Micko
Flying me north to some people and friends
To the music, to the music in Freo.

POINT OF DEPARTURE c Louisa Wise

Your heart it is broken
That pain in your barrel chest
Will take a full year to subside
You had a lot of fun with all of those women
Now she's taking it out of your hide
They threw themselves at you, slipped into your bed
Made love the best way that they could
Followed you down to this point of departure
Where everything changes for good.

With grief in your eyes you come to this house
Lucidity upon your lips
The tragedy is, if she took you back now
You'd be a changed man, but it's too late now
You've gone and missed the ship.
They threw themselves at you, slipped into your bed
Made love the best way that they could
Followed you down to this point of departure
Where everything changes for good.

I sailed a small ship around you last time
You came around here just flirting with me
I burnt a small bridge just like in the song
You wanted to learn from me.
I threw myself at you, slipped into your bed
Made love the best way that I could
Lucky for me it happened all in my head
'Cause everything's changed now for good.

THOUGHTS ON A TRAM c Louisa Wise

People in cars they drive down the roads
Drive every which way between jobs and abodes
Waiting in traffic long time after time
Belching out fumes and stenches and grime.
But people in trams hop on and hop off
Despite the odd sneeze and the odd public cough
Their life is much better getting here to there
And they don't leave much dirty footprints in the air.

Trams is the go, hop on and hop off
Be you Bohemian, redneck or toff
You'll get there unruffled by trafficky hell
You'll get there anon to the sound of a bell.
Tram vignettes abound, hinted stories unfold
Glimpses that tell, of the young and the old
All kinds of people in all kinds of moods
Short little old ladies and tall hipster dudes.

Words of the world, mysterious tongues
Microcosm of Melbourne, its old and its young
Immigrants, tourists, students and kids
Friends and sweet lovers and loners amidst them all
The crowd of humanity all on the move
All in this together, it all seems to prove
The net of our lives is again cast anew
Pulling up souls in this ever random crew.

On a Melbourne tram in the sun and the rain
And we never will be here like this again
But it doesn't matter and none of us care
We're out and about, not back in some lair
The living and doing of day to day life
Connects us and saves us from isolate strife
And loneliness rife that cuts like a knife.
So trams is the go, hop on and hop off
Be you Bohemian, redneck or toff
You'll get there unruffled by trafficky hell
You'll get there anon to the sound of a bell....dingalingaling, ding ding ding...

Play it right this time, next time not. (3X)
Get it right this time, next time not (3X)

CHORUS as above

MIDDLE 8  You got to learn from the beginning
Got to start from where you are.
Got to have some faith in the process
That starts within your heart.

If you want to talk to the Muses
Turn off your flipping phone.

CHORUS  2steps forward, one step back. (3X) (Repeat)

If you have a vision of your own
If you want to talk to the Muses
Turn off your flipping phone.

MY YEAR OF TWO WINTERS  c Louisa Wise

In my year of 2 winters, I had the deep blues
Through pain and through memory, I was paying my dues
I had the deep purples around the red eyes
I asked myself often, was I being so wise?

In my year of 2 winters, I travelled so far
Swam over the ocean, I followed my star
I played all my music for strangers and friends
I saw my dear brother draw near to his end.

I saw my first country, its rivers and trees
Its towns and its cities, its lakes and its seas.
The snow and the pines held me all in their thrall
The light through bare branches thrown upon a wall
(Of an old wooden house with its story to tell
Of the trees that it came from, before they were felled.)

I saw some old lovers, now sweetest of friends
I saw what time changes, how it makes its amends
And all my sweet woman tribe answered my call
By blood or by hist'ry, sisters one & all.

Then home to my country, my wonderful Oz
Down under the planet, deep down in my soul
Its rainings and sunnings have carried me on
Through the hell of my changing to a rosier dawn.
The light of the morning will fall on my face
I'll take my new path in this beautiful place.

LUTHIER SONG c Louisa Wise 2001

You choose the wood and mill it well, and put it aside to dry
You open the grain to the loud refrain of machines that will do or die
You choose it again to suit a sound you see in your musical eye of eyes
You know how it feels to a wood molecule to loudly sing or lightly sigh.

Bend it, steam it, shape it anew, mold it far beyond the pale
Beyond anything that it was before, it will not be known to fail
Glue it well with crystals of glue from horses' hooves and horses' bones
Clamp it down with tiny clamps ensuring the beauty of unborn tones.

Tap it again with ear held close for every promise of sound
Shape and thickness of silky wood will make its voice resound
Carve the neck and mark the head with your ocean sign of turquoise shell
Rub the back and waist and shoulders that only you can know so well.

String it up and then behold, the sound at last flies free
Finish the finish and sound the sound, and then you turn to me
With careful hands I take it up and try it oh so gingerly
Bolder now I pull out the sound that pulls love and pride and love from me. (3 times)

LETTING GO c Louisa Wise 2013

Found a lucky coin and a penny dropped
I had some bad luck but it seems to have stopped
My life was a mess but I dusted & mopped
And things are falling into place now, things are falling into place now.
I turned the coin over, it's heads I win
I showed I can stand, I showed I can spin
I'm swimming not sinking, by fluke or by fin
I can face what I got to face now, face what I got to face now.

CHORUS

And I wish you well but I'm doing well without you
Yes I wish you well but I'm doing well without you
And I know you wish me well
And I know you're doing well without me.

Well I had the mixed feelings bearing down on me
I wanted you back but I had to be free
I'm not looking for another, just want to be me
Just chasing that state of grace now, chasing that state of grace now.
Well I can take lonely, I can take sad
I can take crazy, I can take mad
I'll take what's good and I'll take what's bad
And I'll take it at my own pace now, take it at my own pace now.

MIDDLE 8 There was no good, there was no bad
We both did the best with what we had
The blame game's over but the sad remains
But the sad will pass with the rest now if we keep on doing our best now.

(CHORUS)

Well I call you up and we talk a while
A fragile thing across many a mile
A comfortable distance for this self-exile
But you're missed in this empty place now.
So I'll take my hand and I'll pat my back
Sort out the lies and shuffle the pack
And I can be Jill without her Jack
I'm no longer going to waste now, no longer going to waste now.

(MID 8/CHORUS)

ANTARCTICA CLOSE TO HOME c Louisa Wise 1990

You outdid us all, put us all to shame
We thought we were ground-breakers, thumbed our nose at fame
First you went Down Under, then down under that
Far away, as far as can be gone.

A cocky bunch were we, a motely crew at best
Shooting pool, shooting pool at the junction, fliers from the nest
The desert around us, coyotes singing free
Under millions of stars 'til the sun lit up the sky.

But we were just waiting, for soul mates we were waiting
Just a spit, just a spit in the ocean, or was that the gene pool
But you saw your way clear to stay clear
Keep light, keep apart, keep free
You kept apart, you went away, you went away and took me
Far away, as far as can be gone.

After two under unders, I began to wonder
What in the world became of you, my friend
When the news reached my ears I saw
Saw all the years pass by
How we lived so irreverently with joy
And now in reverence crying for you
Far away as truly can be gone (2X)
Fare thee well.
